Where's the Quiet?

What's happened to quiet library settings?  I've been to quieter circuses.  This is 3rd, possibly 4th straight visit with unattended children running freely or school age kids non-stop chattering and adults talking on their cell phone in the library.  All 3 situations never addressed by a staffer.  Jim

I don't have a simple answer to that.  There are more people using the library these days, and in many different ways than when we were young, which leads to more of a buzz in the building.  Some of us remember never feeling welcome in a library when we were kids, and now love seeing so many kids feeling like they can come to this library.  The more they are here, the more likely they are to read, which is our ultimate goal.  However, if you are finding the area unusually noisy and don't feel comfortable asking people to quiet down so you can read, ask one of our staff to approach them.  We also have designated the southeast corner of the upper level as a quiet area, so that is the best place to find your quiet spot.  We are in the process of decorating it more to make it more inviting, but it IS the quietest area here.

Calm Staff / Upset Customer

I recently observed a staff member at the circulation desk admirably handle an irate patron who was very upset because her account had been turned over to collections. I really wasn't being snoopy-- just standing near the desk while this person was shouting. As a citizen of the community I understand and appreciate the library's decision to send severely delinquent accounts to collections. Moreover, I'd love to commend the staff who remained calm, kind, and professional in a difficult situation.    Miss M

Thanks for taking the time to write - the staff person you observed will appreciate hearing your support.  You're right, the library materials belong to the entire community, and we take our responsibility to make sure they are available to everyone seriously.  Overall, Lafayette residents are a very conscientious group, and remember to return their items to their library.

Excellent Assistance

Twice I received excellent assistance from Nicole.  I had a list of about 10 books and only 1 was available.  The rest she happily ordered for me.  They are all coming in, giving me a lot to read.
I appreciated her friendly help.

Business Help

I own a small business in Lafayette and met the Business Librarian, through the Lafayette Chamber. I recently inquired about reference services for businesses. She was very friendly and helpful. I discovered that there are a lot of online resources I can access from my office that will save me time and money. Karen also did some research for me to help me with a little speech I gave. She also educated and tutored me on how to use the online business resources. What a great resource (both the business librarian and the library)! Thanks, for all your professional assistance!
Susan

Rude Staff

Some of the employees are rude and don't believe you on anything, and the computers are really slow.

Negative Staff

When I asked a librarian to check a book out for me he/she ( I will not disclose the gender) called me a pervert based on the cover and wouldn't let me check the book out. The next week I came back to check the book out and the librarian gave me a dirty look and won't check a book out for me.

I need to get more information from you about what happened before I can talk with staff.  Please either call or email me and I will talk with you about this situation.  Michele Seipp, Library Director 303-665-5200 x3801 or micheles@cityoflafayette.com

Bad Service

You guys  [word deleted]!

STAFF REPLY
It sounds like you had a bad experience with one of our staff here.  If you can tell us more about what you didn't like, we might be able to fix things.  What helps the most is if you tell us what you didn't like and what you'd prefer we did instead.
