Summer reading thanks

I just wanted to commend the Lafayette Library on the EXCELLENT work they do to keep the kids interested in reading for the summer. My children cannot wait to read to the dogs again next summer. It makes a huge difference for the beginning of the year and my kids absolutely love the coming to the library. Also, you have the NICEST staff and volunteers of any of the libraries we visit.

Thank you to all the volunteers who make PAWS to Read a fun and exciting learning opportunity for my children!  My daughter Josie is highly motivated each week to learn to read a new book, so that she can read it to a puppy when we come to the library. I have loved watching her confidence grow this summer!

We really appreciate your feedback!  Summer reading is hard work, but it's one of the most rewarding things we get to do each year.  And as a staff we agree - we have wonderful volunteers, both human and canine, and we are grateful for their willlingness to share their time and talents with us.

Is Prospector an Option?

It would be super if the Lafayette Library could join Prospector. This is a fantastic service for patrons who want items available in other Colorado libraries without having to deal with the hassle of Inter-library Loan.

Cost and compatibility are the main reasons we are not part of the system. Most of the Prospector libraries use a particular catalog software that is different from the one used in Lafayette, Erie, Longmont, and Westminster among other libraries.  For your convenience we have a link on our website Request an Item that you can use to request books, and we will do the research to find them and bring them here for you.

Impatient Kids

We LOVE the library and librarians and story time. However before the next session starts I thought I''d mention that sometimes the announcements presented before the program are too long. The kids are little and it is not developmentally appropriate to expect them to sit still for 5 minutes of announcements before the program starts...we usually wind up with too many wiggles and then can''t make it through the program itself. The announcements were presented at the end and/or posted where parent''s can read them. Ms. M

Need Time To Read

Why can't there be longer due-back dates for books with a high number of pages? I often check out computer books that are 700+ pages. It takes longer to get through them than say a 300 page fiction book. Brian C

STAFF REPLY - We understand your dilemma perfectly!  Some books are definitely more difficult to finish in the 3-week checkout period than others.  Books can then be renewed for another 3-week period so long as they are not on hold for another person.   The idea of a maximum 6-week turnover period is so that all our materials can be shared among the many people who use our library.  You can renew online, by phone at 303-665-5200, ext. 2 or of course in person.

I really like the section of the library that has been set up for recommended by library staff books. I''ve found some great books there that I probably wouldn''t have discovered on my own.

Where's the Quiet?

What's happened to quiet library settings?  I've been to quieter circuses.  This is 3rd, possibly 4th straight visit with unattended children running freely or school age kids non-stop chattering and adults talking on their cell phone in the library.  All 3 situations never addressed by a staffer.  Jim

I don't have a simple answer to that.  There are more people using the library these days, and in many different ways than when we were young, which leads to more of a buzz in the building.  Some of us remember never feeling welcome in a library when we were kids, and now love seeing so many kids feeling like they can come to this library.  The more they are here, the more likely they are to read, which is our ultimate goal.  However, if you are finding the area unusually noisy and don't feel comfortable asking people to quiet down so you can read, ask one of our staff to approach them.  We also have designated the southeast corner of the upper level as a quiet area, so that is the best place to find your quiet spot.  We are in the process of decorating it more to make it more inviting, but it IS the quietest area here.

How About Some PG Movies

Could I request that you purchase some adult movies that are not rated R.  Some of us would like good cinema without the barrage of violence, profanity and sex.  I would guess that >80% of the movies upstairs are rated R.  Thank you, Adrian

While our DVD collection does include R-rated films, our goal is to provide a variety of movies.  We have many PG and PG-13 rated films in the adult collection, as well as other items (for example, PBS, A&E, and  BBC productions) which may be more to your taste.  Keep in mind that about 60% of our films are checked out at any time, so there may be items you have missed by browsing the shelves.  You might want to browse the collection in the online catalog and put films that interest you on hold (the reference librarian will be glad to help you with that). 

We've only been purchasing DVDs for a few years, so the film collection is definitely still "under construction".  We welcome suggestions for additions to the collection, and we do our best to purchase requests that meet our film selection criteria:  winners of major film awards, as well as film classics and critically acclaimed foreign films, independent films, and films based on books.

Hygiene

Please place sign in bathrooms informing people to wash their hands after they use bathroom.  Just witnessed personnot washing their hands -then this person proceeded to use library facility.  Not Good!  Hermann
